Australian Bridging Visa Changes Effective 1 November 2026 – What You Need to Know
01 N ovember 2026
Important changes to Australia's Bridging Visa arrangements came into effect on 1 November 2026, introducing new restrictions that may significantly affect certain Protection Visa applicants, including those awaiting decisions, Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) reviews or judicial review proceedings.
These changes have important implications for individuals seeking to travel outside Australia while their immigration matters remain unresolved.
What Has Changed to Bridging Visa B?
A Bridging Visa B (Subclass 020) generally allows eligible visa applicants to temporarily leave Australia and return within an approved travel period while their immigration matters are being processed.
However, from 1 November 2026, new restrictions limit access to Bridging Visa B for certain Protection Visa applicants.
The changes particularly affect individuals who:
• Have a pending Protection Visa application.
• Have received a Protection Visa refusal and are seeking review before the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART).
• Are pursuing relevant judicial review proceedings following a Protection Visa refusal.
These applicants may no longer be eligible to obtain a new Bridging Visa B to facilitate overseas travel and return to Australia.
What Happens to Existing Bridging Visa B Holders?
The changes do not automatically cancel Bridging Visas B that were already granted before 1 November 2026.
Individuals holding an existing Bridging Visa B should carefully review their visa conditions, travel permissions and the dates during which they are authorised to return to Australia.
Applications lodged before the commencement of the changes may also be subject to transitional arrangements.
It is important not to assume that an existing Bridging Visa provides unrestricted travel rights.
Are Other Visa Applicants Affected?
The new Bridging Visa B restrictions primarily concern certain Protection Visa applicants.
Individuals who have applied for other visa categories, including Partner Visas, Skilled Visas and Employer-Sponsored Visas, may continue to be eligible for a Bridging Visa B, provided they satisfy the applicable legal requirements.
However, eligibility depends on individual circumstances, immigration history and current visa status.
Changes Affecting Bridging Visa E Holders
The November 2026 reforms also introduce changes affecting certain Bridging Visa E holders, including requirements relating to compliance and conduct.
Individuals holding a Bridging Visa E should ensure they understand the conditions attached to their visa and the consequences of non-compliance.
Breaching visa conditions may have serious immigration consequences.
Why These Changes Matter for Protection Visa Applicants
For individuals seeking protection in Australia, overseas travel while an application or appeal is pending can carry significant legal risks.
Leaving Australia without appropriate travel permission may affect an individual's ability to return, their immigration status and, depending on the circumstances, their ongoing application or review proceedings.
The new restrictions make it particularly important for Protection Visa applicants to obtain legal advice before making international travel arrangements.
Do not assume that lodging an appeal or having an unresolved immigration matter automatically provides the right to leave and re-enter Australia.
